Bookmarking

To bookmark all these fantastic site i have gone away from using 3rd party software and stuck it out with my firefox browser manager. Its great becuase i can add new folder to remeber what the subject was about. So i created a new folder just for my net11 bookmarks, i also add descriptions and give the book marks meaningful names so i do not forget what they are.

During the hands-on training that covers Basic Internet Features, it is expected that those advanced users take that time to review more complex technical features of their web browser.

Searching the Internet for Advanced User

  • A lesson plan to teach patrons advanced search queries that narrow results and push most relevant pages to top of results lists.

Boolean Searching

Most Hits

Results 1 - 10 of about 2,750,000,000 for advanced OR internet OR users . (0.13 seconds)

Results 1 - 10 of about 318,000,000 for advanced AND internet AND users . (0.06 seconds)

Results 1 - 10 of about 122,000,000 for advanced internet users . (0.04 seconds)

cleary from the results achieved the first query of "advanced OR internet OR users" returned the most hits. This is because the search is searching for all those terms, either advanced, internet or users.

searching for pages that strictly relate to the subject of advanced internet users would bring the number of hits down but the information would be more relevant.

Skills Based Information

After reading some comments in the discussion board i still don't really know what skills based is referring to i have used google.com and searched the following

Results 1 - 10 of about 155,000 for advanced AND internet AND users AND skills-based. (0.40 seconds)

I don't really know how useful it is, but hey i found some net11 blogs, which was helpful to me, becuase they also did not know what was skills-based meant as well :)

University

Results 1 - 10 of about 58,300,000 for advanced AND internet AND users AND university. (0.21 seconds)

This returned back information from a number of universities, although not all hits returned were from university sites, a lot were.

I tried searching subject directory search engines as well for example
http://bubl.ac.uk/link/linksearch.cfm

but i could not achieve good results with this, the hits were too broad and not all of them were from university sites.

Results 1 - 10 of about 810,000 for advanced AND internet AND users. (0.16 seconds)
using http://www.studentnow.com/collegelist/searchuniversities.html
all results returned were from .edu (university sites) but alot of the information was irrelevant.

overall the best way i think would be to do advanced AND internet AND users AND university
then you would have to pick out the best results.

Or i noticed on another blog, that they were searching +edu.au which would return all the universities in Australia.

edit: thanks to a dear member in the discussion boards they have enlightened me to the fact that to find sites strictly from universites to add the keyword site: edu.au

for example advanced internet users site:edu.au

this will return only sites that have specified domain.

These are the result for my most common search engine google.com.

these are the results for searching 9 search engines at once using copernic agent. The first hit in google and copernic returend the same results: http://www.k12science.org/tutorials/advanced/ but there were some differences. The 2nd hit on copernic returned a website called the occasional company http://www.theoccasionalcompany.co.uk Now at first glance i can already see that this site has nothing to do with advanced internet users.

Bookmark Manager

Again i've never used this type of program before, so i installed it and checked it out. I don't really have a lot of bookmarks so maybe thats why i've never come across this sort of application before. I can see how it might useful to a lot of people who have tremendous amounts of bookmarks, as it sorts and categorizes them to how you want. But for me i don't have many bookmarks and this software is not free and i didn't not want to pay for it, so i uninstalled it.

I used the program set out in the unit outline bookmark manager :)

thanks for the top delpino !! will try it as soon as possible

Search Manager / Combiners

I must admit I've never used one of these search manager type programs. To the left is a screenshot of Copernic Agent. I installed it and it works fine, and its pretty good how it can combine and search a whole range of search engines at once. Very useful to find a range of information quickly. I tried installing the other program mentioned glutton, but it did not work correctly and kept giving me some sort of an error. So ill still with Copernic Agent.

Media Players

I have never had quicktime player on my system in ages, so i thought i would download that again to see whats new in the new version. Reading the information at the site it sounded really good. The installation went well and it installed correctly, but again with this player i felt that it was oversized, with features i did not need. I explored around and watched a few .mov movies to check if it was working, and it was all fine. I figured the only reason why i would need a .mov player is to maybe play some trailers i had on my pc, other then i don't really have any of these file types on my computers. So i uninstalled the program. While i was on www.filehippo.com i noticed they had a program called quicktime alternative, now this program is around 12 meg in size smaller then the original quicktime, it still handles all .mov files and everything just like the original version, but a major benefit is that its free ware. So there was now reminder to upgrade to pro version like in the original. I definitely prefer this application over quicktime.

Also another program i thought i knew everything about was windows media player. Everybody knows that media player comes standard with windows xp, but what i didnt know is wmp 11 was out of beta stage and fully functional. So i downloaded this and installed it. I really liked it, the first impression by the new black skin is cool, features wise it still feels very similar to wmp 10 for example you have rip burn options, options to connect to the net etc i never use these features anyways. I'm guessing this is going to be stock media player for windows vista, and thats why it comes with that black skin. Overall it was a pretty good program it took a while to install but other then that its great.
